First TTT - to cut or not to cut

I've been wanting to enter the Thursday Think Tank for the longest time!
Today it's finally happening since Kelli and Rebecca joined forces and basically bribed me into playing along by having a fabulous giveaway!
You get up to EIGHT chances to win a Little Apples - Layer cake!

For the last couple of days I've been staring at a Little Apples - Layer cake. I want it - no doubt about it, but can't really afford it. Either the layer cake itself or the shipping or even both are too expensive.

Erin has made the cutest quilt using a charm pack which is much cheaper, but she mentioned that a layer cake would have been nicer to also get the dancing little girls in the quilt.
So please dont hop on over to Rebecca's and Kelli's blogs and check out the giveaway ;-)

Thursday Think Tank

So what am I thinking about - you might ask.
Well, I mentioned in one of my last posts that I've been dreaming about a quilt using rainbow charms. Check out what Hadley did - so amazing!!!

I will definitely try to get into one of the next rainbow charms swap, but for the meantime I was thinking, that I could start cutting what I already got. I have a lot of FQs (mainly in bright colors). Most of them are untouched.

I hate cutting fabric - that's a fact! I guess that also keeps me from actually making quilts  ;-)

So, I thought what if I take my FQs and whatever scraps I find and cut them into 5" squares, a couple of 2,5" squares and maybe a 1-3/4" stripe since I wanted to make a Spiderweb-quilt ever since I got the book "More Quilt's from The Quiltmakers Gift".

I guess this is a common method, but what do you think?
And do you prewash FQs?

Please leave plenty of comments on this one!!! I really want your advise!

  1. Thanks for linking up, and using all of your winning chances! I def. love the idea of cutting your own charms with the fabs you already have. I LOVE spider web quilts, but haven't ever tried one. I don't know about everyone else, but I don't prewash. Not b/c I have any concrete opinion either way, I think just b/c I'm lazy like that. LOL

  3. I'm with Kelli! I never prewash anything. I like that little bit of shrinkage after it is washed. I know some have trouble with colour running, but it has never happened to me. OMG! Did I just jinx myself? This is all your fault Sana!
Love the idea of a solids spiderweb quilt. Probably cutting your own is more economical as well.
Sorry, I also entered the draw, but didn't use all the chances, you are still more likely to win than I am. Unless of course this cancels out the whole colour running thing!!

  4. I'm looking forward to seeing your spider web quilt! :) I agree with Kelli..I think making your own charms with the fabrics you already have would be great..I do not like cutting fabrics either..it's the most boring part of all the whole process. And for me, matching fabrics for the quilt is very difficult as well.
I do not pre-wash either..and for the same reason..I'm too lazy *LOL*

I wish you the best of luck to win that layer cake because I would love to see your dancing princess on the Little Apples. :)

  6. I know what you mean about cutting fabric! I agree Hadley's quilt is amazing and cutting your own charms would be great way to make one. A spiders web would be fan too - so many quilts, so little time!

  7. I found your blog through the small blog link-up. Although I’m a tad bit bigger at 344 followers and have been blogging since 2010, I still feel new at blogging because there’s so much to learn. I have learned however, that the quilting community is the most helpful, loving and caring group of people on the planet. In the last almost 2 yrs. I have actually made some very real friends and can’t imagine life without them in it. Blogging has been a real PLUS for me as I hope it has been for you. I’m going to become one of your followers and invite you to become one of my new followers. Also, please fill out the follow by email box and you won’t forget about me.

  10. Congrats on winning a layer cake! I can't wait to see it become a quilt.

I love all of the rainbow charm quilts I see, but I don't have the space for planning anything large. I keep coming back to making a charm quilt using the idea of grabbing each next piece out of a paper bag, so the design is random and left to chance. I have muliple charms packs of certain lines that would be good candidate for it.

I only prewash fabrics that are going to become clothing, just to get any shrinking out of the way. I know some people prewash everything, but I figure if something isn't going to be worn, if it shrinks a little that would be ok with me.
